Desert Island Stitch: Santigold
A close friend of mine turned me on to Santigold around the time she released her second album “Master of My Make-Believe.” I was aware of her peripherally, but never really listened to her. At his insistence, I gave her a proper go [see what I did there?]. My love was instantaneous, and her music quickly weaved its way into regular rotation on my iPod, switching back and forth between the first two albums.
As I passed the halfway mark in the Desert Island Stitch series, I realized that all of the previous pieces were albums that were released more than 25 years ago. I wanted this collection to be more than just “classic” albums, but to also represent modern and future classics. So even though this album may be the newest album [so far?] to be represented, its no less an awesome banger!
With this piece, I hand dyed the 18 point aida, and used satin floss for the gold to give it bit of a shimmer. Before starting on Santi, I had a few second guesses on floss color and finally was able to nail down a range that was similar enough but still keeps the interpretive pixelated feel that I like.
Let me know what you think in the comments below… and while I start plotting out Desert Island Stitch number seven, please enjoy a little “Banshee” from the 99ยข album.
Oh and if you’ve never seen her live, well, you are just plain missing out. Not only is she amazing, but her dancers are always serving face!
