… better together…

I realize that I’ve been using a lot of swears lately to acknowledge the elephant in the room. I can’t help it, I have an Italian mother, and sometimes a good old fashioned expletive is the only way to truly convey the frustration I feel every time I turn on the news. Over the past couple of months it has been quite challenging to watch/listen without a deep sense of dread while exclaiming “are you fucking kidding me?” It seems like, everyday, there is a new offense to [fill in the blank: logic, civility, science, compassion, respect, civil rights… I could go on].

I’m generally a positive person, which is why its been so hard to “check-in” and stay informed about these daily events. Hypocrisy is something that I have great difficulty with, I find it to be a tell-tale indicator of a charlatan or manipulator. Unfortunately, there is a lot of snake oil being sold. With that being said, it is completely reckless and irresponsible to “check-out” right now, because there are entirely too many shenanigans going on.

I’ve been mulling on all of this over the past weeks, trying to figure out what I can do as a artist. How can I use my voice to incite an intellectual renaissance. Okay okay, yeah, that’s a little grandiose for some little cog with a blog. But I feel the need to add something to the collective consciousness.

So I’ve sent Protest-Bots out into the world, carrying a simple message of unity. A message to remind everyone that we all work better together. If we are going to truly change the world and make EVERYWHERE great, we need to do it together.

3… 2… 1… Blastoff!

3… 2… 1… Blastoff!

Picture it, Long Beach, 2011. I had decided that I was going to design a papercraft rocket ship to accompany my new Mr. Roboto papercraft. It was much more challenging to create than the Mr. Roboto, as I wanted it to have that classic bulb shape at the top and angular landing gear. After a bit of trial and error, I was able to pull it together pretty well, if I don’t say so myself.

Now it’s been a few years since I put one together, and I was riding high after my successful Kickstarter campaign, so I thought I’d cut out a new rocket using the same material that I used for my Mr. Roboto pledges [they were made with photo paper rather than just plain old cardstock]. I popped the computer on to pull the file up, but much to my surprise, the file was gone!

I proceeded to dig through all of my back up disks and archives. Anywhere I would have put the file, but much to my chagrin, I couldn’t find it. I was a little heartbroken at the thought of having to start the process over from scratch, but then I remembered that I had uploaded a JPG layout to the Costco Photo site [initially I was unhappy with how it printed because I didn’t like the color and was going to go back and adjust it, but never got around to it… it takes about 3 hours to cut one of these suckers out, so I really had to be in the mood to do it]. I logged in, and thankfully it was still there [bless you Costco! #Costco4eva].

I still needed a proper source file [Adobe Illustrator] so that I could make color adjustments as needed, and maybe play with the design a bit [à la Graffiti Pride-bot]. And thus began the process of redrawing the pieces in Illustrator. Granted, being able to scan the print [I couldn’t save the JPG back from Costco Photo, lame, so I had to print it to scan it] was a much more desirable process to having to break apart my first model [which I still have, remarkably] and scan the individual pieces, especially since I had made modifications since then.

So, long story short… I made a rocket… again!

Kick Started

Kick Started

Kick Started

I was super excited to announce that my Kickstarter project successfully funded [on September 16th, to be exact]… so excited that I totally forgot to post about it! I know, priorities… but as I’m gearing up to start sending out rewards, I just wanted to reflect for a second on the project…

I have to say, I was a little surprised at how the project was actually funded. I thought that I was going to get a lot more lower-end backers [at the 10$ level] from the people who have been sending me messages about wanting stickers <Crickets> Apparently these folks only wanted stickers when they were free, which was a bit of a bummer.

However, on the upside, the bulk of my backers went with the higher level rewards [YAY!], which was super cool and unexpected. Granted, I was then obligated to spend the past month putting together Mr Robotos.

It was an interesting process, and I give many thanks to those who did support the project, and I’m looking forward to sending out the rewards!

Kick It!

Kick It!

So for a few years now, I’ve been leaving little pieces of free art around town and assorted places. Whether it’s a painted box tied up with a bow and filled with stickers or a custom can with a papercraft Mr. Roboto in it. It’s fun for me, and I really dig it when when I get a tweet back, or a @HappiDevil tag in a picture on the Facegrams and what not.

I’ve received many an email from people as far as the Philippines requesting that I send them stickers. And I did, because I had stickers to share. Now, unfortunately, my supply has dwindled to near nothing. So I says to myself, “why not kick up a Kickstarter?” If people are keen on my stickers, surely they won’t have a problem kicking in a few bucks toward funding a project. And even better, I’ll be able to produce HIGHER QUALITY die-cut stickers!

So… with that… I’ve started a Kickstarter! I’ve got some great pledge rewards and some super great stickers. You should not only check it out, but you should totes kick in a few coins. Why? Because its fun, and I figure, if somebody can raise four thousand dollars for ONE sticker design, I should be able to raise $900 for ELEVEN sticker designs, right?

Lush: a set list infographic.

Last night I was lucky enough to see Lush perform at the Roxy on Sunset. The show was rescheduled from April 14th, due to the band having some visa issues [boo!]. Miki was gracious and unnecessarily apologized for having to delay the show to a crowd that had already forgiven the issue. It was wonderful to see and hear the band perform live, and despite being such a small venue, the band sounded massive and full.

… because I like making graphics…

The setlist favored Gala with Split coming in a close second with one track less at six. Personal highlights for me, aside from the obvious “De-Luxe” and “For Love,” were “Lovelife,” “Undertow,” and “Lit Up.” The new track “Out of Control” slipped so effortlessly into the set, and was absolutely stunning to hear live.

But the show stealer was definitely “Sweetness and Light,” they absolutely slayed the track so much so that I wasn’t even mad that they didn’t play “Nothing Natural.” And I would be lying if I said I didn’t get a little misty when they came out for the second encore and Miki dedicated “Monochrome” to Chris.

Hopefully this little teaser will be a lead in to great things on the horizon and not just a little taste of nostalgia.

Ki Ki Ki Ma Ma Ma

So I had the idea for this project last October when AMC was having its annual Fear Fest. They were airing all of the Friday the 13th Movies, and I thought to myself, “You know what, I think I’m going to make an infographic. Because, why not.”

So I set the DVR and slogged through 10 Friday movies that I haven’t really watched since the days of “USA Up All Night.” I did not include the remake or the Freddy vs. Jason films. I was really on the fence as to whether or not they should be included, but after giving it careful consideration, I decided against it.

Anywho, here’s the graphic, and I hope you like it… throw any questions about how I compiled the data in the comments below…
